Somehow surfing on the east coast (and even the continental west coast) seems tame after seeing some of the waves in Hawaii. At least your friend got some good waves out of the storm.
I never think of storm surfing but I think of a colleague who used to head off and surf every day when we lived in Manhattan Beach. One day he came back late, looking a bit like the mummy – he'd tried to shoot the pier and got wave smacked into one of the barnacled pilings. OUCH
