Race Day Playlist
For real. This is the playlist that {somehow} propelled Dave Jack into 14th place in his first 8km race. Absurd. I mean some of the songs are awesome, amping songs – ok 2 of them are. The rest I shake my head. Hippy.
Monday’s Pics of Sunday
Another sunny, winter Sunday. This has {so far} been one of the best winters I can remember, not too much rain and loads of glorious sunny, blue sky days.
Mum bought Ethan 2 massive shipping containers on Trade Me last week, so the boys project this weekend was to turn them into a play hut for Ethan. After a few modifications the boys were ready to paint, although Ethan swears it’s not finished until there are rainbows and dragons painted on it (WTF?).
Well the paint had to dry, so we packed up and headed to the ramp at Muriwai for the afternoon.
It was so sunny and warm, Dave had a great session on the ramp, Ethan got his pushing sussed on the flat and I read my book in the sun. It was lovely!

Awwww! He was writing "I Love Mum" with dirt xxxx
The End of Summer
Today marks the first day of Autumn. We have harvested an awesome crop from the vege garden this season and now have more tomatoes than we can eat! Dave has just whipped up his usual batch of late summer hot sauce with our tomatoes plus our habaneros and red chillies. AND IT IS HOT! Mouth is burning but I must eat more of it’s spicy freshness.
Dave Cooks: Sunday Breakfast
It should be compulsory for everyone to wake up to these smells at least once a week, thanks Dave xxxx

Cinnamon Date Scones & Pancakes
So my husband……
He’s had a real ‘beaut’ couple of days. Yesterday he was cutting some hose, was using a new blade and sliced his thumb open. It looked like he had gutted a really small fish. So he spent the afternoon at the ER and went back to finish the job today. Things were going well, he was putting back the hatch on the thing he was fixing (some anti syphon exhaust thing) when the hatch blew shut and locked Dave the Engineer in a space the size of the cupboard under a sink. Are you picturing this? So he pulled off an air vent and proceeded to call for help. I’m crying just writing this I swear. He had no cell phone and was working by himself. Luckily there were some guys working all the way across the marina who heard his scared little cries. And he was rescued. Get better work stories? I don’t think so.
1 week in
Twenty-ten is going swimmingly so far. The days are long, hot and lazy, the weather has been great and we are all happy and healthy. Even more so due to the odd appearance of a Resolution List prepared by Dave on New Years Day.
It wasn’t a list of resolutions though, more like commandments and was called The New Deal.
- No alcohol for 30 days beginning January 1st
- New budget to be made
- Stick to the list at the grocery store, list will be made according to a weekly menu which will also be made
- No impulse buying
- SAVE MONEY
- Baby?
So, 10 days in we are doing really well. Neither of us have had a drink and the desire to have an evening glass of wine or cocktail seems to be waning as well. The best part apart #1 is that I have lost 1kg! I’m so happy about this, I have also been exercising more (which is quite easy as living with Dave is akin to living with Jillian from TBL – the man LOVES to run).
My sleep has proufoundly improved also. I am so used to waking up in the morning with a stiff, sore, exhausted jaw from grinding / clenching my teeth in the night, I was astounded when I awoke one morning early in the New Year with a pain free and relaxed jaw. I’m not sure whether I can attribute this to the lack of alcohol or the reduction in caffeine intake due the removal of bourbon & cokes from my nightly routine – but whatever is responsible, it can only be good.
As for the rest of the list, well there has been no impulse buying because there is literally no money to buy anything so we are doing well there!
I have also got everything rolling for uni again, my course manuals came in the mail yesterday so I plan to get ahead on my reading before semester starts.
So considering that I never make resolutions and sticking to them may be an even rarer occurrence, I think The Jacks are kicking 2010 off in a very good way.
Grilled Chicken Salad w/ Wasabi & Fresh Herb Dressing
Fact: This is the BEST salad ever.
Chef: Dave
Step 1: Marinate chicken in soy sauce, sweet chilli sauce and Worcestershire sauce
Step 2: BBQ the chicken breasts
Step 3: Make the dressing while chicken is grilling; combine fresh garlic cloves, wasabi, fresh thyme, rosemary, basil, balsamic vinegar, EVOO and aioli. Emulsify using your new George Forman Stick blender that you got for Christmas (thanks MIL!)
Step 4: Prepare salad of fresh lettuce greens, avocado, sunflower seeds, tomato and mashed boiled egg
Step 5: Slice cooked chicken, add to salad and top with the dressing.
This is what 'socialist' medicine looks like
What I had suspected was a particularly nasty case of Man-Flu has turned out to be a bit more serious as Dave is now into his 24th hour in residence at North Shore hospital. Maybe it’s his appendix maybe it’s giardia WE JUST DON’T KNOW. I wish someone would figure it out. We are visiting him at the moment and Ethan is alternating between being fine and getting really upset about his daddy having to stay here .
Dave’s amazing optimistic attitude keeps shining through – he can’t believe that this is the reality of free health care. It really makes you wonder what all of those rednecks are fussing about.
